Vols quiet on Marquez North injury rumors

There are rumors swirling about Tennessee Volunteers receiver Marquez North suffering a potentially serious injury, but the university has kept quiet and yet to provide any details.

It all started when Brad Matthews of 1340 Knoxville, a division of Fox Sports, reported that North had suffered a “serious non-contact leg injury,” could not put any weight on his leg and was set for an MRI today on what was feared to be a “season ending” injury.

Seth Stokes of 1180 WVLZ then added another piece of news, only fueling the speculation.

But then other local radio personalities jumped in, saying that the injury was not all that serious contrary to previous reports.

And then, Daniel Lewis of Rocky Top Insider finally managed to shed some light on just what happened to North.

Here’s what we’ve been told via a source: North did, indeed, sustain an injury early during practice on Wednesday. After the injury, North spent the rest of Wednesday’s session on the training table observing practice, but was not in any noticeable pain. The injury continues to be evaluated and the severity of the injury is unknown at this time. We can confirm that much, but anything else at this point is speculation.

Either way, Vols fans should cross their fingers. North has shown tremendous promise as a receiver since suiting up in Knoxville and has 68 receptions for 816 yards and five touchdowns in two seasons, but has also appeared in just 21 games due to various injuries.

With Tennessee looking to keep improving under coach Butch Jones, losing North this season could end up being quite the blow. If any new information regarding his injury becomes public, Campus Sports will update this story accordingly.

Tennessee opens the season at home against Bowling Green on September 5.
