Vanderbilts starting left tackle Andrew Jelks out for season

Nothing seems to be going right for head coach Derek Mason and his Vanderbilt Commodores. After being ranked as the 121st best college football team by USA today, the Commodores have lost one of their best players for the season.

Starting left tackle Andrew Jelks suffered a knee injury during 11- on-11 drills in Wednesdays practice.

Jelks has 22 starts on the offensive line and is also one of the leaders in Vanderbilt locker room.

“I’m really disappointed for Andrew because he’s such a fine young man,” Mason said in a statement. “Andrew was having an excellent camp and was looking forward to having a big year. He’s a tremendous talent who commands respect throughout the locker room. Andrew’s a dedicated, hard worker and I know he will come back even stronger.

“It’s time for others to step up and claim a more substantial role in the success of our offense. We definitely have players on our roster that can fill the void left by Andrew’s departure,” the coach added.

After finishing last season 3-9 and winless in the SEC, it doesn’t look like things are going to improve much for the Commodores.

Vanderbilt opens the season on Thursday, September 3rd against Western Kentucky.
