UNM Adds Rutgers, Wisconsin to Future Schedules

The University of New Mexico will play at Rutgers in 2016 and at Wisconsin in 2018, according to a release on upcoming seasons by the school’s football program. Additionally, they have added a home-and-home series with Louisiana-Monroe.

Other home games include Mississippi Valley State in 2015 and Abilene Christian in 2017.

The Louisiana-Monroe series will be played in Albuquerque in 2016, with the Lobos finishing the series at University of Lousiana-Monroe in 2019. It is the second scheduled home-and-home for UNM after the addition of Tulsa in 2015 and 2017.

UNM will receive a total of $2.1 million for their recently scheduled future matchups. The university will receive $950,000 for the Rutgers game, and $1.2 million for their game at Wisconsin.

This decision comes in a wave of power conference schools adding stronger opponents to their future schedules. With the College Football Playoff system now in place, teams are straying away from the traditional method of organizing games against “cupcake” teams that will pad the win column, and focusing more on improving strength of schedule. That’s what matters most to the College Football Playoff voting committee, and that’s why schools like Notre Dame have added strong SEC candidates and Texas has made agreements with schools in Big 12 and SEC for their future schedules as well.
