UNLV to build football stadium by the Strip?

Could the UNLV Rebels finally be getting a new stadium? If they do, it would appear that the university has some big plans that would help generate revenue throughout the year.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, UNLV is eyeing some ground that would allow them to move away from Sam Boyd Stadium after more than four decades.

More specifically, UNLV is looking at purchasing land right off The Strip.

There is a 42-acre lot available for the cool price of $50 million. The land is on the same side of Tropicana Avenue as the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Talk about a prime location.

If UNLV is able to secure the 42-acre lot, they will immediately begin looking to find financing for a 45,000 seat stadium.

According to the report, “‘it could be’ a $523 million, 45,000-seat open-air version with a shading system. The $523 million includes $100 million for site and infrastructure costs.”

The most interesting aspect of the potential deal is whether stadium legislation would allow an off-campus stadium site. If they do, that would be ideal for the Rebels. If not, the land could still be purchased and used for potential research or teaching buildings at UNLV.
