The Houston Cougars football team has been down as of the last few seasons. While they have reached a bowl game the last two seasons, they haven’t been anywhere near the BCS spoiler team they were five years ago with Kevin Sumlin at the helm and quarterback Case Keenum breaking records every week.
According to College Football Talk, their new head coach Tom Herman knows that they have struggled in years past and wants to fire them up in some way. Maybe saying his wide receivers suck isn’t the best way to do it, but it could actually work.
Joseph Duarte of The Houston Chronicle reported via Twitter that Herman doesn’t believe his receivers don’t really belong in Division I.

Now, maybe that is a little harsh, but Herman came from Ohio State during the offseason, so he’s expected to have high, and I mean very high, expectations for his team. This may actually be what his receiving unit needs to get fired up for the upcoming season.
The team only returns one starting receiver from last season in Demarcus Ayers and he doesn’t provide the numbers like you would a returning guy would. He only caught passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns in 2014.
I don’t know if Herman’s strategy is actually going to work, but we will have to wait and see what happens.
The Cougars open the season on September 5 when they host Tennessee Tech.
