South Carolina and CB Wesley Green to part ways

The South Carolina Gamecocks and redshirt freshman defensive back Wesley Green have mutually agreed to part ways, head coach Steve Spurrier announced this morning. Kevin McGuire of NBC Sports’ College Football Talk reported the story.

“It was mutually decided that Wesley needs a fresh start someone else,” South Carolina head coach Spurrier said.

A former four-star recruit out of Georgia’s Martin Luther King High School, near Atlanta, Wesley seemed to have issues from the get-go the moment he committed to the Gamecocks, mostly of the academic variety. He almost did not meet the academic requirements to play last season, but was ultimately cleared and took a redshirt. He has four years of eligibility remaining.

Just where Green ends up next remains to be seen. He drew interest from a number of schools as a recruit including Georgia, Auburn, Clemson, LSU, Ohio State and Alabama, among many others, but will have to sit out a year if he transfers to another FBS program. Should he head to a lower division of play, be it FCS, junior college or something else, he will be able to play immediately.

Whatever the next step for Green is, Campus Sports will update his status as more information becomes available.

South Carolina opens the season against North Carolina on September 3.
