Shilique Calhoun doesn’t regret returning to Michigan State

The 2015 NFL Draft kicks off on Thursday night at Auditorium Theatre in Chicago.

One player who will be watching is Michigan State Spartans defensive end Shilique Calhoun. However, unlike hundreds of other players who will be tuning in, Calhoun will be doing so as a fan.

Calhoun could have declared for the draft, but ultimately decided to return to Michigan State to finish out his degree.

Had Calhoun declared, many believe he would have been a first-round pick so there was a risk in returning to the Spartans for another season. That risk is worth it for Calhoun, who says he has no regrets about returning to school.

I’m happy I’m still here, I’m not mad about it,” Calhoun said last Saturday, according to Mike Griffith of MLive.com. “I’m loving my decision to still be a part of the Spartan football team and family.

“I have a chance to get my degree and move forward as a person, and that was a goal on my list. I’m proud of myself, and I’m pretty sure my family is proud of me. When that time comes for me to turn professional, I’ll be happy.”

It certainly seems like Calhoun has his head on straight.

The decision to return is also great news for the Spartans and head coach Mark Dantonio, who will now have one of the top returning defensive linemen in college football.

Is returning a risk? Absolutely, but if Michigan State can go on to win the conference title and find themselves in the national championship picture, it will be well worth it for Calhoun.
