Seven months after injury, Briante Weber NBA-bound

Seven months after suffering a serious knee injury, former Virginia Commonwealth Rams guard Briante Weber is headed to the NBA.

On his personal Twitter page, Weber announced that he had signed a professional contract with the Miami Heat and that he was, to paraphrase former Heat star LeBron James, “taking his talents to South Beach.”

Easily one of the best defensive guards in NCAA history, Weber was 12 steals away from the all-time NCAA record before suffering his injury in a game against Richmond last season. As he came to a jump stop, he tore the ACL, MCL and meniscus in his right knee, ending his season and putting a huge question mark on his draft stock.

At the time of his injury, Weber was averaging 8.1 points, 4.3 assists and 3.9 steals per game. In four years with VCU, he posted 6.8 points, three assists and 2.9 steals.

Given how Miami already has Goran Dragic and Mario Chalmers manning the point, Weber is probably being brought on as a depth option. He’s likely still recovering from his injury, but his defense is off the charts and Miami could use plenty of that after missing the playoffs last season.

If he is cut during the season, he’ll have the option of being sent to the team’s D-League affiliate Sioux City Skyforce if no other NBA team gives him a contract.

No matter how you look at it, this is a great accomplishment for Weber and hopefully his injury doesn’t rob him of his explosive defensive skills.
