Rysheed Jordan to leave St. John’s

The Chris Mullin era is set to begin at St. John’s University, but it will have to be without one of the program’s top players. The school announced today that point guard Rysheed Jordan will leave the program and instead pursue “professional opportunities.”

Jordan started 21 games for the Red Storm last year and averaged 14.1 points and 3.1 assists per game his sophomore year, shooting 43.5 percent from the field and 36 percent from three-point range. Jordan also posted 1.7 steals per contest and addressed his decision to the media.

“Playing professional basketball has always been a goal of mine. I believe I am ready to take the next step in my basketball career and plan to work hard to achieve my dream of playing in the NBA,” said Jordan. “I am thankful for the opportunities and support St. John’s University has provided to me. This decision was made with my family’s best interests in mind.”

“I will always be a proud Johnnie and I thank Coach Mullin for his support. I look forward to maintaining a relationship with him,” said Jordan.

This news comes on the heels of a report by Roger Rubin of the New York Daily News that stated Jordan could be academically ineligible for the fall semester, and maybe more. Thus, rather than work his tail off in summer classes as well as in the fall, it appears that Jordan will instead take his chances at going pro.

The former five-star recruit has the size and speed at 6’4″, 185 pounds, but wasn’t on this year’s draft radar by any means. With Draft Day now less than three weeks away, he’d honestly be better off either changing his mind and staying at St. John’s or even transferring.

Campus Sports will update Jordan’s story as his plans for the future further develop.
