Pittsburgh’s Josh Newkirk Undergoes Knee Surgery

Pittsburgh Panthers guard Josh Newkirk underwent left knee surgery today, according to head coach Jamie Dixon. The operation repaired Newkirk’s lateral meniscus as well as a microfracture.

Dixon said his player would miss four to six months of action, but is expected to be ready for the preseason.

Newkirk, a rising junior from Raleigh, North Carolina, posted 5.9 points and 2.7 assists over 20.8 minutes per game last season. He shot about 38 percent from the field and with James Robinson expected to be at the point next year, it’s hard to say where Newkirk will fit in the rotation.

Pittsburgh struggled in its second ACC season, going just 19-15 (8-10 ACC) and failing to make the NCAA tournament for the second time in four years.

The team did manage to get to the NIT, but were defeated by the George Washington Colonials in the first round.
