Philip Nelson Hits Reset Button, Joins South Alabama

Former Minnesota and Rutgers quarterback Philip Nelson has resurfaced again, and with a new FBS team. Speaking to Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Nelson’s father stated that his son will join the South Alabama Jaguars of the Sun Belt Conference.

Nelson last played for the Minnesota Golden Gophers in 2013, the year before he transferred to Rutgers. In two seasons with the Gophers, he threw for 2,179 yards and 17 touchdowns. He also ran for 548 yards and six scores.

His commitment to South Alabama is a new beginning for him, as he was dismissed from Rutgers’ football team in January 2014 after being charged with two counts of assault that stemmed from a fight outside a Minnesota bar.

In the fracas, a former D-II football player named Isaac Kolstad was severely injured and fought for his life in a hospital.

Though it was later determined that another person involved in the fight was responsible for Kolstad’s injury, Nelson ended up pleading guilty via a plea agreement and was sentenced to community service.

Nelson will now join a South Alabama team that has gone 37-28 since its establishment back in 2009 and is looking to build off of a season in which it went 6-7 (5-3 Sun Belt) and appeared in its first bowl game. In the Raycom Media Camellia Bowl, the Jaguars lost to the Bowling Green Falcons.
