Northwestern DT Sean McEvilly retires from football

The Northwestern Wildcats have just lost a big piece to their defensive line and it doesn’t look like they will be getting him back. Defensive tackle Sean McEvilly, who had just earned a sixth year of eligibility after missing the 2014 season, announced that he would be retiring from football.

According to SB Nation, McEvilly has been dealing with some chronic orthopedic issues that kept him from playing in 2014. He said in a statement that he understands his decision is best for himself and the team as well.

“It’s disappointing to not be on the field opening camp this week, but this is the right decision not just for my health and future, but for the team,” said McEvilly. “I’m so thankful for the teammates and coaches I’ve competed alongside, and the opportunity I’ve had at Northwestern over the last five years. I can’t begin to express my gratitude to my parents for helping me reach this point. I will leave here as a two-time graduate of this university and will always be a Wildcat.”

McEvilly was listed as a backup for the 2015 season, but he would have provided much needed depth along the defensive line for the Wildcats. Head coach Pat Fitzgerald noted at the Big Ten Media Days that younger players would see playing time along the defensive line this season, so it looks like that could have been a big factor in McEvilly’s decision to retire.

The Wildcats open the 2015 season on September 5 when they host the Stanford Cardinal.

We wish McEvilly the best of luck in his future endeavors.
