NCAA Denies Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield

The Oklahoma Sooners last ditch effort to have quarterback Baker Mayfield cleared for the remainder of the 2014 season has failed.  The NCAA will not allow Mayfield, a Texas Tech transfer, to play for the Sooners this season.

Mayfield, who was a Red Raiders walk on, pleaded to the NCAA to be cleared and hoped that enrolling in the spring semester last year would help his case moving forward, but the NCAA clearly thought otherwise.

Mayfield threw for 2,315 yards, 12 touchdowns and 9 interceptions during his true freshman season, a year in which he was voted Big 12 Freshman of the Year.  The loss of Mayfield drastically hurts the Sooners’ depth at the quarterback position.  The fourth ranked team simply lacks an elite quarterback and has relied on its less than stellar sophomore Trevor Knight.  Knight has thrown just four touchdowns and three interceptions throughout the first three games and needs to improve in order to elevate Oklahoma to the top of college football, and into the postseason.
