The man who inspired the iconic TV character, however, leaves with world without such a veil of mystery.
John Riggi–the New Jersey mob boss who inspired the HBO character portrayed by the late James Gandolfini–passed away on Monday, Complex reported via NJ.com. He was 90 years old.
Per Lee Seglem, assistant director of the State Commission of Investigation: “This guy may be the last of the old time mob bosses for this region. He outlived all the big names.”
Riggi was reportedly a key associate to Simone “Sam The Plumber” Decavalcante, head of “New Jersey’s only homegrown mob family.”
Of course, those who knew Riggi say he was nothing like Tony Soprano. Nonetheless the Decavalcante family reportedly has suffered from having the hit HBO show associated with them.
