Minnesota Recruit Denied Admission To School

The Minnesota basketball program got some unfortunate news Tuesday when it was announced that Senegalese recruit Gaston Diedhiou was not admitted to the university for the fall semester.  Diedhiou received poor marks on his English proficiency exam, negatively affecting his status with the school.

The 6 foot 7 forward spent last season playing in the Canary Islands and had been granted a full qualifier status by the NCAA clearinghouse.  The school has always been aware of Diedhiou’s marks before the decision was made, but hoped he would arrive on campus with a better understanding of the english language and receive an improved score on their english proficiency test.

Diedhiou will have the opportunity to retake the test in time to enroll for the spring semester, and can be reevaluated for eligibility at that time.

After winning the NIT last season, head coach Richard Pitino had high expectations for a team loaded with veteran talent.  That talent is still there, and while the loss of Diedhiou is not good news, it is a bitter pill the Golden Gophers should be able to swallow handily.
