Michigan State DB Wins Eligibility Appeal

Michigan State’s familiarly-named defensive back is finally eligible to play and will take the field this fall.

Drake Martinez, younger brother of former Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez, was not given the opportunity to see the field much when he decided to follow in his brother’s footsteps to play for the Huskers. So, he did what a lot of lower tier college athletes do. He went to a junior college.

Martinez left Nebraska and transferred to Saddleback College, where he played for his sophomore season. Martinez left the program following the 2014 season and signed a letter of intent to play football for the Michigan State Spartans in January.

Late Tuesday afternoon, head Spartan coach Mark Dantonio tweeted out his excitement for Martinez winning his appeal to play football in the fall.

The defensive backfield Michigan State has been very strong in the past few seasons. With an athlete like Martinez anchoring the team, it will surely give teams fits.
