Kevin Newman First Ever to Win Back-to-Back CCBL Batting Titles

Arizona Wildcats shortstop Kevin Newman recently became the first player ever to win back-to back Thurman Munson League Batting Championships in the prestigious Cape Cod Collegiate Baseball League.

During his 2013 summer campaign in the CCBL, Newman hit for a .375 average but this season raised his CCBL batting average five points to .380 over his 31 regular season games in 2014.

Past winners of the esteemed award include Lance Berkman (.352), Jason Varitek (.371), Chuck Knoblauch (.361), and Buck Showalter (.434), to name a few of the former players who went on to have very successful playing or managing careers in Major League Baseball.

In addition to Newman’s .380 average with the Falmouth Commodores, he was tied for 13th in the Cape League in hits (46), tied for 18th in doubles (7), tied for 14th in RBI (20), tied for 14th in stolen bases (10), tied for 23rd in runs scored (20), and tied for 12th in walks (18).

Newman missed the first 11 games of the Cape Cod League season due to timing conflicts with the USA Baseball collegiate national team that eventually left the Wildcats’ shortstop off the roster. In two seasons with the Wildcats, Newman has started 110 games at shortstop and has a career average of .320. Newman was also awarded Pac-12 All-Conference Team honors in both of his first two seasons in Tucson.
