Former WVU QB Ford Childress transfers to Fresno State

Former West Virginia Mountaineers quarterback Ford Childress has transferred to Fresno State and will compete for the starting quarterback’s job when fall camp begins on August 3. Anthony Galaviz of the Fresno Bee reported the development.

As a redshirt freshman in 2013, Childress appeared in two games for West Virginia and threw for 421 yards and three touchdowns before suffering a pectoral injury and being ruled out for the season. He was later suspended from the team for a violation of team rules and left the team in 2014, ultimately ending up at Trinity Valley Community College in Texas. While there, he took a medical redshirt and helped coach the quarterbacks, as TVCC offensive coordinator Clay Patterson told Galaviz.

Childress will now compete for the starting job under center with sophomore Zach Greenlee and freshmen Kilton Anderson and Chason Virgil. Given how he has experience playing at a power conference school in WVU and has good football genes, being the son of former Pro Bowl defensive lineman Ray Childress, the job could very well be his to lose.

Campus Sports will update Fresno State’s quarterback battle as more details emerge.

The Bulldogs open the 2015 season, the team’s fourth under Tim DeRuyter, at home against the Southland’s Abilene Christian Wildcats.
