Former Texas and Montana State DB Eryon Barnett dies

Former Texas and Montana State cornerback Eryon Barnett passed away yesterday. Parker Gabriel of the Bozeman Daily Chronicle reported the tragic news.

No cause of death has been given yet, but Montana State athletic officials offered brief statements.

“We’re heartbroken by the loss of Eryon Barnett,” the coach said. “He fought through so much as a football player, and always showed a resilient spirit that everyone that knew him drew from and admired.”

MSU athletic director Peter Fields added, “Eryon’s a fighter. He was always fighting through adversity, so it was a real shocker to find out that he passed away.”

Barnett starred at Trinity High School in Euless, Texas, near Dallas, before committing to the Longhorns, with whom he redshirted in 2009 before appearing in seven games on special teams the following year. He missed the 2011 season before transferring to Montana State. He spent three seasons with the Bobcats after being granted a sixth year of eligibility, and missed time last season with pancreatitis.

In his time with the team, he accumulated 37 tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble.

Campus Sports sends its condolences to the Barnett family and will update this story as more information becomes available.
