Former Cal DE Sione Sina officially joins Utah

Former California Golden Bears defensive end and graduate transfer Sione Sina has officially been added to the Utah Utes’ roster and will be eligible to play immediately.

The university confirmed the addition of Sina, which was reported by John Taylor of NBC Sports’ College Football Talk.

Originally from Elk Grove, California, just south of Sacramento, Sina played junior college at the College of San Mateo before committing to Cal as a three-star prospect. Unfortunately, he never saw much of the field in Berkeley as injuries have hampered him ever since he arrived on the NCAA level.

This past spring, he left the Cal football program and joined the school’s rugby team, helping it to the national championship game.

Just how much playing time he’ll get at Utah is unclear, but he has good size for his position at 6-foot-3, 275 pounds and should at least see playing time in certain situations so long as he can stay off of the trainer’s table.

Given how Utah ranked 73rd in the nation in total defense last season, Sina is definitely at least worth the flyer.

Utah opens the season at home against Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan Wolverines on September 3.
