Former BYU QB Jim McMahon To Have Jersey Retired

BYU has announced that former quarterback Jim McMahon will have his No. 9 jersey retired and will be inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame.

McMahon joins Marion Probert, Eldon Fortie, Ty Detmer, Gifford Nielsen, and Steve Young as the only players to have their jerseys retired by the school. He is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and at one point held 70 NCAA passing records.

During his All-American career at BYU, he passed for 9,536 yards and 84 touchdowns. In 1981, he finished third in voting for the Heisman Trophy and was the Davey O’Brien and Sammy Baugh Trophy winner.

McMahon was drafted fifth overall by the Chicago Bears in the 1982 NFL draft. He played for seven teams over his career and was a Pro Bowler in 1985. He finished his NFL career with 18,148 passing yards, 100 touchdowns, and 90 interceptions.

Recently, he completed online courses to attain his Bachelors of Arts degree, a requisite for being eligible to have your jersey retired by the school.

The ceremony will be held at halftime of BYU’s home game against Utah State on October 3.
