Ereck Flowers Undergoes Knee Surgery

The left tackle of any football team is frequently recognized as one of the most important players on the field. It’s the left tackle’s responsibility to protect the quarterback’s blind side from any incoming defenders and without him the quarterback would be helpless.

Miami Hurricanes left tackle Ereck Flowers underwent a surgical procedure to fix his injured knee today, just one week after sustaining the injury in the team’s 30-6 win over the Virginia Tech Hokies. It remains unclear how long Flowers will be out, but the minimum timetable includes this weekend’s match up against North Carolina. Still, an injury to such a large man’s knee can linger, and fans should prepare to be without their left tackle for an extended period of time. Head coach Al Golden addressed the issue briefly following practice Wednesday. “As soon as we get information, we’ll get it to you,” coach Al Golden said.

This season, Flowers had been a stalwart along the offensive line starting all seven games and protecting quarterback Brad Kaaya well. Prior to the injury, Flowers was among NFL scouts’ top offensive linemen and a projected top 40 pick according to NFLDraftSport.com. Furthermore, he draft stock could take a major hit if he’s unable to return to the field this season. Amongst a team filled with talent, Flowers is the team’s top prospect and would be a major loss to the program. More information should develop as the severity of the injury is discovered and the determination of how long Flowers will be out is made.

In the foreseeable future, Flowers’ likely replacement will be senior Jon Feliciano. Feliciano has had his fair share of experience as a member of the Hurricanes, starting all thirteen games a season ago.
