Derrick Gordon Will Transfer to Seton Hall

Former UMass guard Derrick Gordon, the first openly gay Division I basketball player, will transfer to Seton Hall. Gordon broke the news to Scott Gleeson of USA Today.

“I’m walking into a great situation,” Gordon told USA TODAY Sports. “This gives me a chance to showcase what I can really do in one of the best conferences (the Big East) in the country, in the national spotlight.”

Gordon will be immediately eligible to play as a graduate transfer. In two seasons with the Minutemen, he averaged 9.6 points and 4.2 rebounds per game while shooting 44 percent from the field. The 6’3″ guard also spent a season at Western Kentucky, averaging 11.8 points and 6.7 rebounds per contest in his time there.

This news is sure to excite Seton Hall fans, as leading scorer Sterling Gibbs recently announced that he would graduate and transfer to UConn. That’s 16.3 points and 3.8 assists per game that the Pirates are suddenly without. Now that Gordon is set to join the team, Seton Hall definitely has the tools to build upon last year’s 16-15 (6-12 Big East) campaign, it’s fifth and best under head coach Kevin Willard.

Hopefully, he can get the team back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006.
