Clemson WR Mike Williams has sprained neck

Clemson Tigers wide receiver Mike Williams sprained his neck during his touchdown catch in his team’s game against Wofford today, coach Dabo Swinney told reporters. Swinney said that Williams is in a neck brace, but his movement and strength is good and he is in bright spirits. The update on his condition was reported on Twitter.

Williams was injured after his helmet hit the goalpost padding as he fell to catch the ball. He stayed down on the ground for several minutes as coaches and players alike mobbed around him to make sure he was OK. He was eventually placed on a stretcher and carted off the field, saluting the crowd as he was driven away.

There is no timetable for his return, but it’s a safe bet that Williams will at least miss next week’s game against Appalachian State. Sprained necks are serious and given how Williams is probably the best receiver in the ACC this year, the team isn’t going to gamble with his health. Entering today’s game, he had 77 receptions for 1,346 yards and nine touchdowns. When he left the game, he had two catches for 20 yards and a touchdown.

Campus Sports will update Williams’ status for next week and beyond as more information becomes available.
