Chris Obekpa to transfer from St. John’s

St. John’s Red Storm leading shot blocker Chris Obekpa will leave the program and transfer. The university made the announcement.

Obekpa averaged 4.5 points, six rebounds and 3.4 blocks per game in three years with St. John’s. He had nothing but good things to say about his time with the program.

“It was a great three years of growing here at St. John’s. I am forever grateful for the friends and family I have met during my time here,” said Obekpa. “Much gratitude goes out to my coaches, teammates, professors and administrators for all of their love and support over the past three years.”

Obekpa’s decision to transfer out of the program leaves first-year head coach Chris Mullin with a big loss, roster-wise. The 6-foot-10, 240 pounder was easily the Red Storm’s best interior player the past few seasons, and the departure of top guard Rysheed Jordan only makes next season more of an uphill battle.

Just why Obekpa, the leading shot blocker in school history, would leave St. John’s has not been made public, but Campus Sports will update both this story and Obekpa’s transfer process as more information becomes available.
