Cal Safety Griffin Piatt’s Season Cut Short

The California Golden Bears will have to replace their leading tackler after announcing starting safety Griffin Piatt will miss the rest of the season due to a knee injury. Piatt suffered the injury in the Bears’ loss to Washington this past Saturday.

This is the second time Piatt will miss significant time due to a knee injury. In 2013, he suffered an ACL tear in spring practice that kept him out for the entire season. He made the move from wide receiver to safety and was thriving at his new position.

You never want to see a player having a career year go down with an injury, but the good news for Piatt and the Bears is he has time is on his side and will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Piatt finishes his 2014 campaign with 32.5 tackles, and also grabbed three interceptions, leading the team in both categories.

Cal ranks last in the country in pass defense, allowing 402 yards per game in the air. Without Piatt, those numbers will likely go up even further.

Despite their defensive woes, the Golden Bears have somehow managed to win four out of six games.

However, they round out their second half of the season with a brutal stretch.

Their next six games: UCLA, Oregon, at Oregon State, at USC, Stanford, and finally BYU.

It will be a daunting task for this year’s team.
