Baseball HOFer Yogi Berra passes away at 90

The sports world is in deep mourning today as Hall of Fame catcher and New York Yankees great Yogi Berra passed away last night. Berra was 90 and his death was reported on Twitter by the Yogi Berra Museum. Surprisingly, he died on the 69 year anniversary of his major league debut.

Born Lawrence Peter Berra in St. Louis, Berra spent 18 years with the Yankees and played in 18 All-Star Games while also winning three American League MVP trophies and 13 World Series rings. He finished his career with a .285 lifetime batting average, 358 home runs and 1,430 RBI.

Berra also had success as an MLB manager and coach, leading the Yankees to the 1964 World Series, where they lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games, and he did the same in 1973 when he led the New York Mets to a miraculous run that ended with them losing to the Oakland Athletics in seven games.

But all accomplishments aside, Berra will be remembered for his kind personality and quirkiness, having blessed us with memorable quotes like, “When you come to a fork in the road, take it,” and “It ain’t over till it’s over.”

Long story short, baseball lost a legend, and there will never be another one like Berra.

Campus Sports sends its sincerest condolences to the Berra family.
