Adam McLean Decommits From Penn State

Make that three players to decommit from Penn State football’s 2015 recruiting class.

Four-star defensive tackle Adam McLean announced his decommitment from the program Tuesday night, joining quarterback Brandon Wimbush and linebacker Josh Barajas, both of whom are currently verbally committed to Notre Dame.

McLean released a statement regarding his decision through a message on his Twitter account:

McLean committed to head coach James Franklin on April 12, the same day as Penn State’s annual Blue-White game. His decision may come as a surprise to many, as he was expected to stick with the Nittany Lions despite receiving interest from numerous top schools.

He was viewed as a sure thing to join the Lions in 2015 after showing up to The Opening, the nation’s top high school football event, with Penn State and the Nittany Lion logo shaved into the back of his head in July.

McLean’s commitment to Penn State came into question in recent weeks. It had been reported that the talented defensive tackle would begin to take official visits to other schools. Recruits are allowed to visit different schools after they have already committed somewhere else. Usually, this ends up badly for the original school, such as the case with Penn State.

The 6-foot-2, 293-pounder has offers from 33 schools including Alabama, Ohio State, Mississippi, Michigan State, Arizona State and Georgia Tech.

He currently has visits in place to Ole Miss, Tennessee and Washington State.

The North Potomac, Md. native is coming off a knee injury that shortened his season at Quince Orchard High School. He is rated as the ninth-best defensive tackle by Rivals.com and the No. 90 prospect in the 2015 class by ESPN.

According to 247Sports, the decision drops the Nittany Lions down to No. 12 in the 2015 team rankings. The Lions’ 2015 class – their first full recruiting class under Franklin – currently stands at 18 players.
